During the road to Kofi Kingston’s WrestleMania 35 title win, there was a huge elephant in the room that the WWE refused to acknowledge. Daniel Bryan, who deemed Kofi unworthy … managed to pull off some of the best promo work of his career by pulling the race card many times with coded language.
Fast forward to SummerSlam 2019 and Kofi is about to have what is arguably the most important match of his title reign with Randy Orton. We know that Randy and Kofi have history but what this feud is missing is acknowledging the obvious. Yet again Kofi is considered unworthy but this story line also has White privilege written all over it.
We know exactly why someone who admittedly has never worked hard and has f*cked up as often as Randy Orton .. coasted through the WWE, while Kofi Kingston kept banging his head against that reinforced concrete ceiling for 10 + years.
We see how the WWE yet again refuses to touch the issue with a ten foot pole. But there is still that undercurrent of race because according to the story line – Kofi is supposed to thank the White man who gave him the opportunity for that fluke title shot.
If one is astute enough you can see that this feud goes deeper than Randy being able to be his boring ass self while Kofi had fake Jamaican accent. But maybe the WWE circumvented a very important factor with Kofi Kingston Vs Randy Orton because they are likely aware of the limitations. Can you picture Randy Orton pulling off a 4+ minute intricate promo live ? I think we know the answer to that one.
Look what happened the last time Randy was involved in a racially charged feud that involved Kofi. During the MVP Lounge segment Randy said “The only place where you three belong is the hood where you came from.” It was very low brow and took about 20 seconds to say.
